Week 2: Hot Flashes | Sleep Problems | Treatments Vasomotor symptoms, also known as hot flashes, are the most common and bothersome physical symptoms of menopause. In this second session from Menopause University, you will learn the techniques to identify, alleviate and eradicate hot flashes during your own menopausal experience.
You’ll understand why hot flashes happen and why they’re perfectly normal. Plus you’ll find out how they relate to the changes your body is going through and how they’re intimately connected with intolerance to cold, mood swings and even fatigue. The session will explore why the traditional medical establishment often fails at treating vasomotor symptoms despite its exhaustive attempts. You’ll discover the fascinating, natural and simple treatment of hot flashes. Plus, you’ll be provided all of the tools and knowledge to help you make your own choices on symptomatic treatment for yourself. Hot flashes, as well as a host of other factors, can affect your sleep, which is essential for your health and well-being. This session will also examine how a lack of sleep can lead to a host of problems including irritability, moodiness, and impaired memory. As with several other factors, the onset of menopause can have an effect on both your quantity and quality of sleep. You’ll gain an understanding of the bio-chemical and neurological process of sleep, and the breakdown in the cycle when insomnia occurs during perimenopause and beyond. You’ll learn what you can do to manage, reverse and even prevent insomnia and when intervention is needed, using both conventional and alternative methods. You’ll also gain an understanding of other conditions that can affect sleep besides menopause, and you’ll learn how certain lifestyle and dietary habits can lead to insomnia. You’ll also learn about menopause sleep disorders such as Restless Leg Syndrome and its various treatments, both conventional and alternative. Monday, May 11, 2009 8:00 PM Eastern
