Week 6: Bone Health and Osteoporosis Osteoporosis is a progressive disease that causes bones to become fragile over time, increasing your risk of broken bones typically in your hip, spine and wrist. The sixth course of the Menopause University series will focus on bone health, how you can maintain it, and what to do when you lose bone density.
You’ll discover how everything from your hormones, your environment and your diet can have an effect on your bones. You’ll become familiar with the biggest risk factors for osteoporosis, and what proactive steps you can take to reduce your chances of getting osteoporosis, including dietary and lifestyle changes. The course will also introduce you to the roles that calcium and Vitamin D play on your bone strength, as well as medical solutions for increasing bone density such as bisphosphonates and what results you can expect from traditional medications. On the other end of the spectrum, you’ll learn which medicines and surgeries will actually increase your risk for osteoporosis and what you can do to protect yourself. You will leave the course understanding the importance of good bone health, how to achieve it, and how to deal with the risk factors for osteoporosis in the event it invades your body.
