Week 4: Breast Cancer - Stages and Treatments It is likely you know someone who has been affected by breast cancer and perhaps you’ve faced it yourself.
In this fourth session, you will learn about the structure and function of the breast, lymph nodes and the effect of estrogen on the breast. You’ll learn the common risk factors for menopausal breast cancer, the different types of cancer, how they are diagnosed, and what it means if you discover you have cancer. The course will detail the different stages and grades of cancer, and it will outline the different roles of a breast oncologist and a breast surgeon. You’ll also learn all about the different therapies and surgeries used to treat cancer, and you’ll gain an understanding of the side effects of chemotherapy, radiation therapy and hormone therapy. In addition, you’ll find out how breast cancers and other cancers are related, and what risks your own family may face. Not only will you will leave the course with a rich understanding of the risks, the symptoms, and treatment options for cancer, you will also learn how you can deal with both the physical and emotional pain that cancer can bring.
